Peace & Justice Committee
Current efforts on behalf of Peace & Justice
Part of the UCC denomination's work for the Mission 4/1 Earth campaign is
Shouting Out! and are writing advocacy letters on behalf of the environment to our representatives and influential individuals:
The Peace and Justice Committee is putting together information and letter writing opportunities for three Sundays.
- On April 21st, after worship, we will be writing letters to the State Department opposing the proposed Keystone XL pipeline. Among other impacts, this project would contribute dramatically to climate change— the equivalent of putting 9 million more cars on the road. You can sign a petition now at 350.org. Go to www.350.org and Bill McKibben's organization is gathering letters in opposition to the Keystone XL pipeline project. Do this as soon as possible as the deadline set by the State Department for receiving comments is Monday, April 28th! You can also write Senators Wyden and Merkley (info below) to tell them to oppose granting a permit for the Keystone XL pipeline. It will carry dirty tar sands oil from Canada across the US to the Gulf of Mexico for refining. It will bring with it a significant increase in global warming. Call or write President Obama, as well. He has the final say in approving the permit for the pipeline.
- On April 28th we will be writing letters to our state representatives advocating for a carbon tax. A carbon tax is used in many countries in Europe and elsewhere to discourage people from using fossil fuels and to fund alternative energies.
- On May 12th we will write to different Oregon representatives to stop coal trains from running through Salem to export coal to China.
Please come by the P&J table after church to raise your voice for the environment and please share this information with your friends.
