Salem Youth Mental Health Group (SYMH) – FAQ
SYMH is a non-sectarian, peer-support group for high school students (grades 9–12). It provides a structured, respectful space where teens can talk about mental health, life pressures, and personal growth while learning practical skills for well-being.
Is SYMH therapy or counseling?
No. SYMH is not therapy and does not provide licensed mental health treatment. It is a facilitated support and learning space. Adult facilitators guide conversation and ensure safety, but they do not diagnose or treat mental health conditions.
Who facilitates SYMH?
SYMH is facilitated by a minimum of two background-checked caring adults, including the church’s pastor and experienced youth leaders. Adults provide structure, uphold safety agreements, and respond if concerns arise. Youth voices guide the direction and topics of the group.
Is SYMH a religious program?
No. SYMH is a non-sectarian group. While it meets at a church, participation does not require religious belief, practice, or affiliation. Faith may come up as one of many topics, but there is no religious instruction or expectation.
What kinds of topics are discussed?
Topics are shaped by the youth and may include :
-
Stress, anxiety, and depression,
-
Communication styles and healthy boundaries,
-
Peer pressure and relationships,
-

How is safety handled?
Community agreements are reviewed regularly. Youth may always choose to pass or step out. Adult facilitators monitor emotional safety. Confidentiality is honored with clear limits. All adult facilitators, including pastors, are mandatory reporters and are required to act if a youth is at risk of harm.
